Guest Speaker- Daniel Bennett
We were pleased to host our guest speaker Daniel Bennett, Senior Strategic Planner at Bellingen Shire Council, at our recent gathering. Daniel provided updates on Bellingen Shire Council’s Growth Management Strategy (GMS) consultations that are currently underway. The gathering was an informative and engaging opportunity to discuss the contents of the Engagement Report that Council is currently developing. This report will detail the responses community members made to the recent Growth Management Strategy consultations.
The GMS will be a very important document that will guide and shape the growth of our community over the next 30 years. The community’s engagement with this process is obviously very important and our Action Group has been following Council’s process with interest and encouragement.
During the meeting we discussed the Engagement Report and unpacked what our local community’s needs and aspirations are, as well as the take home themes that have emerged from the consultations. You can find a link to the report here (link to report). The most common themes from the consultation included the need for more housing choice and greater housing affordability (over 30% of comments); protection of the natural environment (18% of comments) and protecting character and supporting community connections (15%) of comments.
After a Draft Strategy has been prepared, Council plans more engagement activities and opportunities to comment on more specific planning strategies. We will continue to work closely with Council during this process, so watch this space!
