Guest Speakers - Nil & Steve
We were excited to host Steven Liaros & Nilmini De Silva, directors of town planning consultancy PolisPlan, during our August Action Group meeting. They shared their innovative ideas about how we can plan our living spaces to be more sustainable and affordable.
Some of the key challenges identified in Bellingen Council’s Growth Management Strategy
(GMS) discussion paper include housing affordability, food security, jobs and prosperity, water availability and sustainable living.
Steven & Nilmini think that their submission to Council’s GMS consultation process can address these issues through a new paradigm in land development. Their proposed ‘Circular Economy Villages’ take a systems approach and integrates work and living spaces with water and energy micro-grids and a local agricultural food system.
Steven and Nilmini operate their consultancy from a motorhome, working with Councils, researchers and communities in different parts of the country to develop their idea for a network of these regenerative villages enabling communities to be more resilient to future social, environmental and economic challenges.
We had 30 interested community members attend their presentation and join in the discussion about how these ideas could be applied in the Bellingen area. We wanted to thank Nil and Steve for their time and for their substantive contribution to the GMS consultation process.
