Emergency Relief

It can happen to anyone. Sometimes, there isn’t enough money to cover the costs of living. There might be too many bills due at once or an unexpected but necessary expense arises.

What assistance is available?

BNC offers assistance in different ways depending on the circumstances, including:

  • Financial aid to help pay electricity bills with EAPA (Energy Account Payment Assistance) vouchers to help with your electricity bill, vouchers to help pay Telstra accounts and in some cases, a food or fuel voucher.
  • Information, referral, and advocacy about options that may be available for your needs.
  • Frozen meals that we can heat up here or you can take home.
  • Free community meal every 2nd and 4th Wednesday of the month. Open to everyone!
  • Share the Dignity personal care bags for women.

Am I eligible?

If you are in a crisis (financial, domestic, social) and you live in the Bellingen town or catchment area (see below) then you are eligible to apply.

How do I access Emergency Relief?

  • EAPA and Telstra vouchers are available at Bellingen Neighbourhood Centre on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays from 10:00am to 3.00pm. To make an appointment, phone 6655 1239 or call in to the Centre.
  • Frozen meals and personal care bags are available during Centre opening hours.

What happens at my appointment for financial aid?

When you arrive at your appointment, you will be greeted by the front desk volunteer and asked if you have brought the required information (see below). Then the Emergency Relief volunteer on duty will show you into the interview room and ask you a few questions to see if we can assist you.

What do I bring to my appointment for financial aid?

  • ID that shows name and address i.e. Driver’s Licence OR Health Care / Pension Card; and
    • For EAPA (Electricity Bill Assistance) you must also bring the original electricity bill to the interview and it must be in your name.
    • For Telstra account assistance, you must also bring the original phone bill to the interview. These vouchers cannot be used to cover connection/disconnection charges or business phone lines. We can only assist with Telstra phone accounts.

What are the emergency relief values?

The BNC Emergency Relief service works within human rights and social justice principles. This means that you can expect our workers to treat you with respect, dignity and without judgment. This service is about empowering people who are in difficult or vulnerable positions.

What areas are covered by Emergency Relief

BNC is funded to cover the Bellingen town and surrounding areas, which includes Brierfield, Darkwood, Fernmount, Gleniffer, Gordonville, Kalang, Sunny Corner, and Thora.

What about for residents in Urunga and Dorrigo areas?
